“Love in the Light” by Laura Kaye

Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

“Hearts in Darkness” to this day remains one of my favorite romance novellas. It’s a sexy little story about 2 people caught in the dark in an elevator. And the attraction, the emotional connection, and the hot-as-f*ck scenes that follow their release make it the ONE book I always recommend to friends who want to dabble in some romance/erotica but have never really given it a go. Short commitment, big payoff.

And Caden Grayson is…*sigh*…a top book boyfriend. Broken hero who just needs a some lovin’. DEAD.

When the author dropped the BOMB that there would be a follow up, full-length novel, I literally thought I was going to explode with joy!!!! And let it be known…Love in the Light does NOT disappoint!

Ok, first, as surprising as this may sound, Love in the Light could possibly be read as a standalone. The author does a great job of including some description of backstory and setting up the who’s, what’s, why’s, etc. BUT…please read paragraph 1 (above) again, and I implore you to read the first book! It’s short! DO IT!

Book 2 follows our couple, Caden and Makenna, two months into their relationship. They’re blissful. Life is perfect. And they have the sex drives of rabbits…and it is divine.

But, with Caden, and his myriad of survivor’s guilt and “I’m not good enough” issues, that can’t possibly last, can it? As Makenna invites Caden to spend Thanksgiving with her family, our hero begins to struggle with the fight with his demons and eventually it all comes to an angsty, heartbreaking head.

The author is true to the characters as she introduced them in book 1 and I felt really rewarded as I read along with Caden and Makenna and their bumpy ride. Caden’s battle to heal from the past had my heart hurting and my tears pouring out and, well, if it can’t be ME to comfort him, I guess I’m happy Makenna is there to do so. *grumbles*

I was just so satisfied with this book…the joys, the pains, the sexy parts (*fans self*)…it was such a treat!

I think Laura Kaye writes a perfect contemporary romance here. There’s broken characters, a strong female lead, healthy family relationships, dealing with past pains, reconciliation, and gosh darnit…a whole lotta hope.

Let it be known right here: CADEN GRAYSON is one sexy mutherf’er and I could read 100 books about him!!!!! *sigh*

I will admit, there were a few parts that bordered on cheesy…which I just wouldn’t have expected from Makenna. There’s a “I’m getting a tattoo” story arc in the mix that came close to making my eyes roll. But, nothing that put me off to the point of distraction.

If you like a sexy contemporary read…if you like tattoos and piercings and a man with a huge heart…if you like a woman who’s willing to fight for her man…this is the book for you!
