Spencer Cohen is the guy who gets answers to relationship questions. Playing the role of the new lover, his job is to make his client’s ex realise one of two things: he doesn’t want to break up or he really does. Either way, his client gets answers.
The ex would either apologize and beg, or turn and walk. But in the end, Spencer’s client won. If he wanted his ex back and got him, it was great. If the guy walked away, then as hard it was for the client, he knew it was over. Regardless of the outcome, Spencer’s work was done.
Andrew Landon’s ex left him without so much as an explanation. But his sister can’t stand to see him miserable, so, much to Andrew’s dismay, they hire Spencer to be Andrew’s new boyfriend to get the ex back.
For Spencer, it is never personal. Merely a business transaction. No emotions, no strings, no complications.
Even a blind man could see how this would end.
Oh how I enjoyed Spencer Cohen!
It’s a delightfully tropey read…fake boyfriend, friends to lovers, opposites attract…in perfect combination.
The book is driven, really, by the charming main characters. Spencer is an escort-for-hire, specializing in helping men win back lost loves. He’s kind and empathetic. He’s tatted and sexy-as-f*ck. He’s all hipster on the outside, softie on the inside. And man, it’s kind of impossible not to love him.
Andrew is a slightly reclusive illustrator. He’s shy and has low self-esteem. But, just when you think you’ve got him pegged as an “any guy”, he’s got this buffed-out bod underneath is sweater vests…and he’s also got an inner strength just waiting to be released.
As the two work to win back Andrew’s ex, come to find 1) that ex isn’t so great and 2) the attraction between Spencer and Andrew actually IS great! Because I liked these characters so much, I felt the desire to squeal at the hope of them together. And NR Walker being the queen of a great HEA, we got enough of one in book 1 that leaves us begging for more!
Spencer. *sigh* Bearded. Tatted. Sexy suspenders. Confident and kind. Honest to goodness…he’s one of the sexiest characters I’ve read in awhile. I WANT HIM.
There is such a sweet chemistry between these characters. I love couples that make each other BETTER. Spencer brings out a confidence in Andrew. Andrew brings out a hopefulness in Spencer. I’m addicted to this couple. I can’t wait for 2 more books of them!
Oh geez…well, there’s tiny bit of angst. TINY. There’s a jerk of an ex-boyfriend. And there are a few moments when our beloved couple *may* not make it. But, again, it’s TINY.
Lovers of love. If you find bearded hipsters and geeky illustrators hot. But mostly, if you love a good romance trope, written with an endearing voice.
