“Rule Breaker” by Lily Morton

about

Is it really wrong to want to murder your boss?

Dylan has worked for Gabe for two years. Two long years of sarcastic comments. Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards.

Not surprisingly he has devoted a lot of time to increasingly inventive ways to murder Gabe. From stabbing him with a cake fork, to garrotting him with his expensive tie, Dylan has thought of everything.

However, a chance encounter opens his eyes to the attraction that has always lain between them, concealed by the layers of antipathy. There are only two problems – Gabe is still a bastard, and he makes wedding planners look like hardened pessimists.

But what happens when Dylan starts to see the real Gabe? What happens when he starts to fall in love with the warm, wary man that he sees glimpses of as the days pass?

Because Gabe is still the same commitment shy, cold man that he’s always been, or is he? Has Dylan had the same effect on Gabe, and has his solid gold rule of no commitment finally been broken? With his heart taken Dylan desperately needs to know, but will he get hurt trying to find the answers?

review

There’s nothing original about the love-hate romance between the ruthless boss and the snarky assistant.
You could go as far as to say this storyline is completely predictable and overused at best.
You could even add this boss is coldhearted and undeserving of his assistant.

But wait!

It’s true the forbidden office love affair has been done before but Morton takes it, recreates it and makes it her own. Tollhouse makes some mighty tasty cookies, but they’re even better when you tweak the recipe and embellish them so they become yours. That is exactly what happened here. An ordinary predictable plot became extraordinary and uncertain when Gabe and Dylan met. Gabe is the boss from hell. Though he may initially appear superficial, he is actually complex and multi-layered. Dylan is quick on his feet and swiftly discovers how to dance the dance and snark the snark. And his coldhearted boss? He has valid reasons for allowing his heart to turn to ice and when it begins to thaw? *sigh* It’s the most glorious thing.

Like

Morton is a new-to-me author and I truly enjoyed her style. She perfects the cocky boss with a secret story. Then she creates the ideal forbidden mate wrapped in a sexy bod with a sassy mouth. And when they come together it’s in a fiery blaze. Sometimes flames are out of control and burn…too fast. It was too much and too scary for Gabe. So he tries to throw ice onto their passion. Unfortunately, it works. The Christmas visit to Dylan’s parent is particularly touching. I found many of the secondary cast to be as strong as the first string. Dylan’s family, Jude, and Henry round out the story. They were all delightful. Well, except for one ex. I was more than thrilled to see him get the boot. The bustling city and quaint country setting, the captivating cast and the overload of emotions….see, nothing ordinary here!

love

I loved the sharp wit. I loved the fierce emotions. I loved the passion. The tension is palpable and it’s not simple sexual tension, it’s so much…more. I adored both Dylan and Gabe. Yes, I loved that cranky, bull-headed, perplexing man. I assumed his past held the answers to his emotional stunted present. When Dylan slips past his defenses and becomes the first person to nurture Gabe, he panics. He understands what it’s like to be loved and to love for the very first time. No one is allowed in his heart. But what does he do when his resolve crumbles? Gabe faces the truth, he wants Dylan…and he wants to cherish him and keep him forever. But is it too late?
And…ohh….ohhhh… *flails* The epilogue is pure perfection!!

beware

Wonderfully wicked men in suits, sometimes demonstrating bad behavior. Gabe is initially ‘with’ a boyfriend, but I would use this term loosely. A scare that puts everything into perspective. And a four-legged friend that will make your heart flutter.

bookisforIf you are new to Morton’s bookshelf as I was, I highly recommend this charismatic, scorching office tango as a marvelous place to start. You will need some patience but hold on…the reward is great.

**And don’t forget to check out Lily’s website for TWO additional scenes, one still has my face split into a massive grin!
***And And!! It appears this might not be the end. I would LOVE to see Henry and Jude get their HEA’s too!!
