“Valor On The Move” by Keira Andrews

He’d give his life to protect the president’s son. But he never expected to risk his heart.

Growing up gay in the White House hasn’t been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed “Valor” by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father’s presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family’s out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef.

It’s definitely not part of Rafa’s plan to get a new Secret Service agent who’s a walking wet dream, but he’s made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it’s not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn’t his job.

Shane’s worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president’s shy, boring son isn’t his dream White House assignment, it’s an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there’s a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it’s harmless. Shane’s never had room for romance in his life, and he’d certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane’s mission.

But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

This gay romance from Keira Andrews is the first part of the Valor duology and features a May-December age difference, Jane Austen levels of pining, forbidden love against the odds, and of course a happy ending.

I don’t think there is trope out there that Andrews can’t handle, but I seriously love her May-December romance stories. She has the uncanny ability to demonstrate how limitless love can be. I was nervous for the first bit, wondering how she was going to sell this relationship to me because I kinda had issues with their differences at first. Not the number of birthday’s they have celebrated but their maturity. Yeah, Rafa easily reads as immature at first. BUT! It’s important to see past first impressions or more like, the polished public impression. Rafa is the son of the President and has spent his teens living in the White House, growing up in the spotlight. It’s his natural instinct to shy away from the limelight but of course, hiding is not really an option when his family holds the honor of First Family of the US of A. What Rafa has mastered is…hiding while IN the spotlight. Not only with the public eye but behind closed doors as well. Rafa is almost finished with college and he’s ready to spread his wings. Before he can do so, he needs to share some hidden truths with his family. He’s gay. He has concealed his sexuality over the years with a faux romance with his best friend. Pretending has been his protective mechanism but it’s beginning to wear him down and he’s counting the days until he can finally be free. Then his new Secret Service assignment throws a kink in his plans. Shane Kendrick sees him. Truly sees him. Unlike anyone else before and this sets off a chain reaction of feels that can’t be stopped.

Jampacked excitement! The action kept me on the edge of my seat and often I was holding my breath. There were some intense scenes! The life of a Secret Service Agent isn’t always glamorous or easy. I’ve had family that held an honorable place with the Department of Homeland Security and I know how demanding it can be. Maintaining a personal life while holding such a position can be challenging. Shane Kendrick has put in years of dedication to work his way up to detail in the White House. He’s finally made it. Eager to kickstart his assignment, he arrives roaring and ready to go. Then he discovers he is protecting the President’s youngest and meekest son. Gravy. It should be an uneventful few months. Ha! He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Shane and Rafa are world’s apart. Shane is much older, experienced and…out. Rafa isn’t any of those things. He is quiet and docile. He is suffocating under a mountain of expectations and false pretenses. However, when they are thrown into a fight or flight situation they crash together and realize they never want to let go. One night…a handful of hours alone opens a flood of feelings that can’t be contained. But…in the light of the day, they can’t be together. There are countless reasons why not. But there is one reason that trumps all others…love. Despite all the reasons they shouldn’t work, they do. Convincing the rest of the world is another matter. Can they survive when everyone wishes to rip them apart? Well….I’d give you a hint but this is Andrews, so I’m sure you can probably guess. I loved the kitchen rendezvous. Food can definitely bring people together. I savored the quiet moments when Rafa began to break free. It was almost like a trust fall…knowing if he fell, Shane would be there to catch him. But Shane never anticipated Rafa snagging him as well. *sigh* So good.

Age gap and forbidden love. A kidnapping that results in bloodshed. Sweet virgin becomes a sexy confident lover.

I think this is typical Keira and if you love her work, I imagine you’ll love this too. Best part? It’s NOT over and these two come back for more….and I’m moving directly onto the sequel!
