I love him…but he’s forgotten why.
A lot can happen in six years, and Ash and Pete have seen their world flipped upside down more times than most. Being parents to Pete’s young nephew wasn’t in their plan, but life happens to them and they roll with the punches. Or at least they did, until new heartache rocks their hard-won happily-ever-after.
Ash loves Pete as much as ever—more, in fact—but Pete battles alone with a burden that weighs heavily on his heart. Ash is no stranger to dark clouds, but the secret Pete keeps from him is a storm that could break them.
Despite the fierce love that once buoyed them, they’re both drowning until a new friend throws them a lifeline. His wisdom offers insight—for better or worse, real love is rarely a smooth journey. For Ash and Pete to come full circle once more, they’ll have to hit the road and chase it.
Oh my heart. I have serious book feels going on from my overindulgence of Garrett Angst. This final book completes the series and I’m exceedingly grateful that I read them all back to back. It was an intense and stunning ride. When Leigh has a couple of broken boys on her hands, she’s a force to be reckoned with. I assumed after the traumatic events in the previous book, Pete and Ash were due for some smooth sailing. Not a chance. The waters were choppy and dangerous and I wanted to shake somebody with my frustrations. I found it difficult to read in public because I couldn’t contain my growls, exasperated mumbles, and leaky eyes. On the other hand, I wasn’t capable of putting it down for it was glued to my hand until I finished. Then the book hangover came. I couldn’t stop thinking about them and couldn’t bring myself to open a new story for weeks. It’s a beautiful gift when a story consumes you to this extent. Thank you, Garrett, I’m so very pleased you chose to bring Pete and Ash full circle.
Things pick up a few years after the previous book. And sadly, they have experienced sharp pain that hasn’t healed. This suffering won’t ever go away but time should help lessen the pain. However, Pete is holding onto a secret that is like a steel sliver in the wound. It will never close and remains open and raw while he holds onto it. Ash knows that Pete is keeping something from him. Something awful that is creating a hollow space between them. His life has hit highs he never dreamed of. But he never wanted to reach the clouds without Pete. And try as he might, he can’t seem to get through to him. His greatest fear is losing Pete. He never imagined he would still have him but only have an empty shell of the man he used to be.
As always, the connection between Garrett’s guys is blinding. Even when she forces a void between them, their love is mesmerizing. My heart swelled watching Ash shine. There was never any doubt that he was meant for great things but I’m thrilled we were able to see it. Then my heart ached for Pete. Such a heavy weight held him down and I longed for him to free himself. They embark on a road trip that will forever change their lives and it was a privilege to ride along. AND…the overlap and intertwining of characters from other series made me soooo happy. I love all of Garrett’s guys and it was a delight having them score some page time. I’m purposefully being vague with the plot here because I wish for you to experience things firsthand. Pete and Ash deserve all of love and happiness in the world *whispers*….and they get it.
Relationship strain from keeping secrets. They connect with their bodies and hearts when words fail them (despite me yelling at them to just TALK!). Depression from profound grief. And tension and worry that they might finally…break.
If you are a Leigh fan like me but haven’t tackled this emotional rollercoaster yet, I urge you to follow the Roads in proper order and check out the “missing scenes” in between books. If you haven’t discovered her eloquence and electrifying stories, Slide in here…you won’t regret it.
