You learn your wisest lessons from your enemies. Assuming, of course, you survive the encounter.
Kendras is a casualty of war: injured, penniless, and quite possibly the last surviving member of the only family he’s ever known—the elite fighting force known as the Scorpions. When a steel-eyed stranger offers him medicine and shelter in exchange for submission and a secret task, Kendras has no choice but to accept. He is a Scorpion; he’ll do whatever it takes to survive.
But his true goal is to rebuild the Scorpions. Neither Steel’s possessive nature nor Kendras’s shattered foot can keep him from finding the last of his brothers… or the mysterious leader of the Scorpions, a man who held Kendras’s heart long before Steel tried to take it for himself. The goal is simple, the situation anything but. To rescue his leader and escape from Steel for good, Kendras must fight through a morass of politics and intrigue, where enemies are allies and even allies have hidden agendas.
Years ago, I read a book that changed my literary course. It was my first foray in m/m romance and it was an unforgettable experience. It was a military romance; dark, dangerous, and unlike anything I had read before. That book was Special Forces- Soldiers. Yeah, I know, interesting choice for my first m/m book. I was overwhelmed and exhausted by the time I finished. Never in my life had a book affected me in such a way. Reading Scorpion brought me back to that poignant shift in my reading addiction. My heart raced and my clammy hands struggled to hold my kindle steady. I held my breath more often than not. And I was blissfully book-weary by the end…I loved it. Aleks pens with a heavy hand, each and every word is significant. Therefore, the intensity of his creations are utterly awe-inspiring. This is not a typical romance story. These warriors have a single purpose in life, but that doesn’t prevent them from falling in love. And when they do, it is profound and unbreakable. This is the story of Kendras. He belongs in a class by himself. Go on, discover his tale and compare him to someone else. I presume you will confirm the same. Before you let your fingers one-click you to the challenge, let me tell you a little bit more….
Impressive world-building kept me focused from the beginning to end. No distracted reading allowed here. First off, where are we? In the old empire of Shara, which consists of three cities. We arrive during the peak of the war. Battles and bloodshed along with politics and power shifts provide a clipped but steady pace. Kendras is a Scorpion and thankfully, we slip back to the time when he was rescued and glimpse the road that led him to where he is now. I was extremely grateful that we discover the secrets of his past. It was critical in understanding the importance of the Scorpions. Early on, we meet Steel and I enjoyed him with caution. It’s clear that Kendras only craves one person but that individual is out of reach. Voinov presents a helpless situation and then makes the impossible…possible. I didn’t know what to expect but the rich satisfaction of lovers united was definitely not on the list.
The list is lengthy. Exceptional writing, second to none characters, and an explosive plot claim the top three. Scorpions are a badass elite group. An exclusive team that one is born into when their first life ends. Comrade has a special meaning and these men would gladly give the ultimate sacrifice to save their fellow Scorpion. The Officer leads them into combat and dominates the men with a fierce but loving hand. We enter after an annihilating blow has claimed the lives of nearly all. Kendras is severely injured and lost in the aftermath. He is dreading but needs to face the casualties. Which proves to be beyond his reach. He doesn’t know what to do but he does know one thing…he will never give up. He is forced into desperate situations but he never loses sight of his goal. I adored Kendras and his cobblestone family. Even though they often left me anxious and troubled. On the flip side, I was shocked and stunned more than once. Sex here is not a cherished or private affair. They share their bodies and relish in the reminder that they are alive. Warfare is hideous and harrowing. Finding their release in each other allows them sensuality with a different sense of intimacy. I want to tell you about each and every striking character but I also wish for you to meet them without any preconceived expectations. Just know this…Voinov delivers a potent tale with piercing emotions and an everlasting impression.
War. Prepare for betrayal and bloodsoaked pages. Special forces. A devoted unit that shares everything from their bodies to their souls. Trigger warning: Rape and the scars that remain. And remarkable men that survive the storms…forever changed yet forever united.
This book is not for the fainthearted or those that fancy fluff. However, it IS for the reader looking for an intense and powerful story. There is suffering and comfort and warriors wielding weapons of destruction and passion. It’s a wild ride that I can’t wait to continue on. Care to join me?
