This isn’t the life Cole dreamt of, but what choice does he have?
With his twenty-third birthday behind him, Cole Moreton now faces the shifter compatibility test which will decide his future. Testing positive means joining a pack and eventually taking the bite. Unfortunately, with enviable skills in self-defence and hand-to-hand combat, the kind of packs interested in him aren’t any he’d want to join.
Logan has been a member of the McKillan pack for most of his life. Pack is family and loyalty is everything, but when the shifter government turns out to be no better than the oppressive humans before them, he questions everything.
Right from their first meeting, Logan knows that a life with the McKillan pack isn’t right for Cole, but with his alpha taking a keen interest in Cole’s skills, Logan’s hands are tied. Mutual attraction builds between them, but acting on it is futile—helping Cole will put their lives at risk and an end to any future they could’ve had.
I’m a bit of a paranormal romance freak and I am over the moon with all the new shifter releases lately. Can’t deny I was super stoked to see Jacobs was starting a new series. If you’re expecting something similar to her most recent and famous Regent’s Park Pack series I’m sorry to say this is nothing close. However, there’s nothing sorry about this intriguing new world. If you’ve read her Altered series you might find this book comes across as a cousin. Which reminds me! I began that series way back when and never finished. I’m feeling the urge to wander back and correct that mistake. Looking forward to completing that series too! Back on track…this story wasn’t romance-centric and it was rather lofty with the world-building. I believe this was necessary to lay a solid foundation for what’s to come. Jacobs also left the door hanging open while I gapped like a fish out of water as I read the last page. So if cliffy’s aren’t your thing, you might want to wait until the next book is released and tackle them back to back. Yet, I was thrilled to kick things off and if she was looking for my attention, she’s got it. When’s book two coming?? Ha. I never said patience was a strong suit of mine.
Interesting shifter world, unlike anything I’ve ever read! When children ‘come of age’ they are tested to determine if they are solid potentials for the shifting community. Politics and power were abused and consequently were transferred from the humans to the shifters….and the shifters intend to keep it that way. Unfortunately, not all of the shifters of power continue to lead with justice and equality; and corruption is spreading like wildfire. Cole is terrified that his test will highlight his gifts and that every pack with want to secure him. His greatest fear is one pack in particular and it’s not a grand surprise that they send someone to observe him on the big day. He would be kidding himself if he claimed ignorance with the results of his test. He’s a solid hit. He’d be the perfect shifter. A fine-tuned fighter that any pack would be eager to claim. But it’s not a life he wants. He may fight like a skilled warrior but his heart is tender and taking lives would destroy his. Worst of all, he can’t fight the draw he feels for Logan. A shifter. What? He doesn’t want to be one, how could he have feelings for one? But soon Cole will discover that this is much bigger than just him. He knew change was coming but he never anticipated everything was going to change.
As always, I love Annabelle’s guys. Cole is young and stubborn but deeply afraid. He wants to throw up a shield and ignore the unpredictability of his future. He doesn’t trust anyone. Especially not the sexy shifter that keeps coming into his space. Logan is older and perhaps wiser but far from happy. He loves his pack but he does not love the direction they have been headed lately. He has witnessed the destruction forced claiming can do and he can’t sit by and watch anymore. Risking everything, he has joined secret forces to help humans escape the bite. Partaking in an underground railroad of sorts, he is a key component in selecting humans desperate enough to leave their lives behind. He knows in his heart Cole is one of the few willing to make such a sacrifice. He just never expected Cole to consume him and take over his heart. They have no chance. None. Best to just accept and admit it wasn’t meant to be. That is until Jacobs throws a curveball and a heart-racing ending. Not sure what we will see when the dust finally settles…but I cannot wait!
Forbidden and undesired love. Hair-raising battles in a world run by wolves. And an ending that might make you cuss but will certainly leave you…craving more.
If paranormal is your thing and you don’t mind the focus on the story rather than the romance, I have a feeling this Escape is exactly what you need!
